Multiple Intelligences

Multiple Intelligences is the theory by Howard Gardner that human beings don't have a single IQ but have multiple intelligences each representing different ways of processing information.  These different intelligences are (as described via https://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-research):

  • Verbal-linguistic intelligence (words and language) which refers to an individual's ability to analyse information and produce work that involves oral and written language, such as speeches, books, and emails.

  • Logical-mathematical intelligence (logic and numbers) which describes the ability to develop equations and proofs, make calculations, and solve abstract problems.

  • Visual-spatial intelligence (images and space) which allows people to comprehend maps and other types of graphical information.

  • Musical intelligence (music, sound and rhythm) which enables individuals to produce and make meaning of different types of sound.

  • Naturalistic intelligence (natural environment) which refers to the ability to identify and distinguish among different types of plants, animals, and weather formations found in the natural world.

  • Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence (body movement and control) entails using one's own body to create products or solve problems.

  • Interpersonal intelligence (other peoples feelings) reflects an ability to recognise and understand other people's moods, desires, motivations, and intentions.

  • Intrapersonal intelligence (self awareness) refers to people's ability to recognise and assess those same characteristics within themselves.

These 2 categories could also be included to further expand the model:

  • Spiritual/existential (religion and 'ultimate issues')

  • Moral ethics (humanity and value of life).

It is suggested we have all the different types of intelligences but we all have them in varying levels, we do not all use each intelligence to the same degree.  As directors of our children's education, this model can help us consider the different ways we can present educational opportunities to them, in a way that suits them best.  This is not to pigeon-hole people into very specific ways of learning and processing, I like to think of it as another tool to help me provide the best possible outcomes for my children in their learning life.

There are a range of free online tests/quizzes you can do to help you work out where your child (and yourself) fit within this model, along with lots of more in-depth information should you wish to explore this theory further, see what you can find.
